Well meaning "Experts" on the club forums keep bringing up things that I know are not true.  It eats at me that people are looking at these "facts" while trying to learn about the car and take them as gospel.  I start wars when I correct them there, so I've given up the practice.  By posting here I can keep the original persons name out of it, and hopefully not embarrass them in the process of educating readers with TRUE information?

Myth #1

This will be an easy one just to get the ball rolling - "any color as long as it's black"  - This is so simple I'm not even going to offer proof - BUSTED, look up "Model T" in any search engine and look at some photos, they came in many colors.

This comes up allot.  Two recent examples:

"The ball cap is not located using the bolts. There is a machined step around the inside of the ball cap. This machined surface fits into the hole on the back of the pan and hogs head and is what is suppose to locate the 4th main. With the bolts out, the 4th main should still be a snug fit into the back of the pan."

"The machined ring on the outside of the 4th main should be a snug fit into the end of the crankcase/hogshead. You should not be able to move it around. This means that the alignment of the pan will dictate where the 4th main will be located - period!"

I got ambitious today, took apart an engine and put the pan and hogshead in a run-in stand.  No gasket, no transmission.  I added a dial indicator and slipped the 4th main back in.  What I found was 0.070" (a lot) of slop up and down motion and just a little (didn't measure) of side to side movement.
